“Historic Chinatown SRO up for sale”

A historic hotel in Vancouver’s Chinatown is up for sale, and local housing advocates say they’re worried about what could happen to its residents.
Built in 1913, the “Royal Building,” also known as the May Wah Hotel now acts as an SRO.
King-Mong Chan with the Chinatown Concern Group says the community is worried the sale could displace many of the current residents.

The historic May Wah Hotel was listed as for sale yesterday (June 15).
One of the larger and older buildings in Chinatown, the property at 262 East Pender Street includes four ground-level retail outlets that maintain a Chinese character plus three storeys containing some 120 rooms of low-income housing.
The building was originally a lodging house, constructed in 1913, that catered to single men working in positions of transitory labour, according to Historic Places, a government-funded website.

【明報專訊】溫市政府計劃向華埠僑團傳統建築協會(CSHBA)撥款10萬元，研究如何保留華埠12幢獲市府列名的傳統建築。撥款包括將會用作聘請專家揀選需要優先修葺的堂所或樓宇，另外亦會聘請財務專家負責製訂集資方案，並考慮發行「社區債券」(Community Bond)向公眾集資，將會深入研究債券的發行形式和回報率。
溫市議會去年通過撥款360萬元，資助總額3600萬元的會館傳承計劃(Chinese Society Legacy Program)，為華埠12幢堂所和會館進行大型修復工程，並指出傳承計劃的其餘資金需透過省和聯邦政府及社區籌集。

【明報專訊】溫市政府第三度推出華社建築等額補貼計劃(Chinese Society Building Matching Program)，將計劃餘款即49.6萬元，以配對方式分配給華埠10間堂所，進行各項維修工程，保存傳統建築特色。提出撥款申請的10間堂所中，有4間是首次獲得資助，市議會將於下星期三的會議上就有關動議表決。

Ten Vancouver Chinatown societies will receive funding totalling $496,000 under the City’s Chinese Society Building Matching Program to carry out renovation works that will help maintain the special characteristics of the historic buildings.
Four of the organizations are first-time applicants. The proposal will be decided at next Wednesday’s council meeting.
Four of the societies: Gee How Oak Tin Association, Zhongshan Lung Jen Benevolent Society, Hoy Yin Association and Yin Ping Benevolent Society of Canada are first-time applicants and they will share the grant of $140,000, while the remaining six will receive a total of $356,000.
“羅品信籲華社爭取撥款 到訪本報 允保留華埠傳統建築”

【明報專訊】溫哥華市長羅品信昨日到訪《明報》並接受專訪，他說市政府發展華埠時，要在發展與保留文化傳統之間作出平衡，強調在保存傳統建築物方面是刻不容緩，但前提是需要得到省及聯邦政府撥款支持，並表示市政府會聯同華裔社區積極爭取，呼籲華裔社區一同發聲。
溫市議會去年通過推行總值達3600萬元的會館傳承計劃(Chinese Society Legacy Program)，為華埠12幢堂所和會館進行大型修復工程，並承諾當中的360萬元由市府承擔，而餘款則要由另外兩級政府撥款支持。羅品信表示，雖然目前為止省及聯邦政府仍然未有任何正面的回應，但他對新上場的杜魯多政府有信心，相信渥太華會願意撥款。而省政府方面，羅品信指相對上比較不樂觀，但希望隨明年的省選迫近，省自由黨政府會有積極回應。

溫哥華華埠的歷史建築，見證130年來社區變遷。127年前華埠富商葉生為家人建造大樓，以堅固三層磚屋取代木構房子，開闢華埠建築新風尚，中西合璧，成為20世紀初期的潮流，距今有127年歷史。而由歐裔建築師設計的華埠樓宇，多融合廣東建築特點，強調多功能與商住結合，體現華人對家鄉的思念。近年有僑領稱這些老舊建築亟待修繕，以免寶貴歷史遺產失去。
目前多幢中西合璧的建築樓房，屹立華埠中心交界處，長年看護華埠的心臟地帶。惟年久失修，很多大樓老化，如何保存歷史建築是華埠亟待解決課題。
